Listen to what 2005 National Flatpicking Champion Joe Smart had to say about Kyle’s album:
As I sit here listening to this album, I am caught away to another place. I have known Kyle Reeder for over four years and have had the opportunity to perform and record with him several times. Some might wonder how thumbpicking and flatpicking can be played together since thumbpicking is the rhythm, bass line, and melody all in one. Although we play two very different styles of guitar picking, it is because of our similar interests and influences we are able to work together. Kyle puts just the right touch on every song, making each one personal and allowing each song to speak for itself.
Out Of The Barrel is a great demonstration of how Kyle has the ability to blend styles and make them work together. The first track, "Black Mountain Rag," brings a smile to my face as I listen to Kyle’s interpretation of a great traditional bluegrass flatpicking tune. He melds it into his own style of thumbpicking demonstrating his ability to cross-pollinate guitar picking styles. Kyle’s original tunes, such as "Turbulence" and "I Sure Miss You," demonstrate his ability to write melodic tunes that enrapture the listener. The familiar Beach Boys melody "Kokomo" is enchanting with the low baritone voicing of the guitar, and I think is the highlight of this album. Kyle’s interpretation of a great jazz standard, "Limehouse Blues," perfectly encompasses all that he is as a guitar player into one song; from traditional thumbpicking in the style of Chet Atkins and Merle Travis, to new age fingerstyle, then to a country chicken-picking style. Kyle’s original tune, "Mighty Cedars," is one of my favorite songs he has written and demonstrates his ability to play a heartfelt tune with emotion. Kyle’s original tune, "Jumper," moves from thumbpicking to flatpicking, showing that his talents are not limited! Rounding out the album is a familiar tune to all thumbpickers, "Steeplechase Lane," and one more original that is sure to get your attention.
If you listen closely, the guitar is Kyle’s voice and each song of this album is a story he is telling us. Out Of The Barrel is a masterpiece of all Kyle’s talents and he delivers with both barrels! It picks you up with the first note of the first song and doesn’t bring you down until the last note of the last song. The end of one song leaves you in anticipation of the next song to come. I hope you enjoy listening to this album as much as I have. Happy listening!
